The I Ching and the Birth of Binary Code
The I Ching (易经, Yì Jīng) — the Book of Changes — is one of the oldest books in the world, a Chinese classic that has shaped philosophy, strategy, and medicine for more than two and a half millennia. It is also, unexpectedly, a chapter in the early history of computing.
Six lines, sixty-four possibilities
The I Ching is built from two fundamental marks: a solid line (yang, —) and a broken line (yin, – –). Stack three lines and you get one of eight trigrams. Stack six and you get one of 64 hexagrams — every possible combination, each with its own name, image, and interpretation.
At its heart, the book is a system for representing states: two symbols, fixed positions, all combinations enumerated. That is, structurally, a binary code.
The Leibniz connection
In 1703, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz — the mathematician who developed the binary arithmetic that underpins every modern computer — published a paper on his system of two digits, 0 and 1. He had been shown the I Ching's hexagrams by a correspondent, and he recognized them at once: broken line, solid line; 0, 1. The ancient Chinese hexagrams and his binary arithmetic were the same idea, written in different alphabets.
Leibniz saw the hexagram system as confirmation that binary arithmetic was not a curiosity but a natural language of thought — a code that could represent anything at all.
What the story means
The link is often told as a neat "ancient China invented binary" story, and the real history is more careful: the I Ching was not a calculating machine, and Leibniz's mathematics was genuinely new. But the resonance is real. Chinese civilization had, two millennia earlier, discovered that two symbols in fixed positions could encode the full range of change — a profound intuition about how information works.
That is the kind of "first draft" of an idea that makes the history of technology feel connected across continents and centuries.
And what about BaZi?
BaZi shares the I Ching's DNA: a small set of symbolic characters (ten stems, twelve branches, five elements, yin and yang) combining into an almost infinite range of individual charts. It is the same instinct — encode the world in a finite alphabet, then read the patterns.
