The Chinese Zodiac: Twelve Animals, One Cycle
Every Chinese New Year, the world asks the same question: whose year is it? But the zodiac animal is only the surface of a deeper system. The twelve animals are the Earthly Branches wearing masks — and each branch carries an element, a season, and even a two-hour slice of the day.
The twelve animals and their hours
The zodiac animals follow the order of the branches: Rat (23:00–01:00), Ox (01:00–03:00), Tiger (03:00–05:00), Rabbit (05:00–07:00), Dragon (07:00–09:00), Snake (09:00–11:00), Horse (11:00–13:00), Goat (13:00–15:00), Monkey (15:00–17:00), Rooster (17:00–19:00), Dog (19:00–21:00), Pig (21:00–23:00).
The traditional story behind the order is a race across a river, arranged by the Great Jade Emperor — the Rat hitching a ride on the Ox, the Dragon pausing to make rain. It is a folk tale with a clock hidden inside it.
Six harmonies and three alliances
Zodiac compatibility in Chinese tradition is not a popularity contest; it follows two formal structures:
Six Harmony pairs (六合): Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, Horse–Goat. These pairs are considered naturally supportive.
Three Harmony groups (三合): Rat–Monkey–Dragon, Ox–Snake–Rooster, Tiger–Horse–Dog, Rabbit–Goat–Pig. Members of a group share a temperamental alliance.

The animal is not the whole chart
Here is the part most quick zodiac memes skip: your animal is only one of your chart's twelve branches, and your chart has four pillars, not one. Two people born in the same animal year can have completely different charts if their months, days, and hours differ — and those layers matter far more in traditional reading than the year animal alone.
